Parliamo questo mese di uno sceneggiatore hollywoodiano: DaltonTrumbo.

In February, Italian audiences will get the chance to be introduced to Dalton Trumbo, virtually unknown outside the US. The movie depicting his life has been nominated for two Golden Globes and stars Bryan Cranston in his first main role after Breaking Bad. He plays Dalton Trumbo, who was born in Montrose, Colorado in 1905. A wannabe-journalist and writer since Junior High, Trumbo got his break in 1934 when he published his first novel, Eclipse and was offered a job as a script-reader at Warner Bros. By 1945, he had become one of the most sought-after screenwriters in Hollywood and his third book, Johnny got his gun, had won the National Book Award. The book reflected his anti-war political stance and his ties to the Communist Party which he had joined in 1943. In 1947, he was asked to appear in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee whose purpose was to investigate whether there had been Russian Propaganda in US movies. He refused to answer any question and, together with other 9 colleagues he was blacklisted and even sent to prison 3 years later. Once he got out, he moved to Mexico where he kept writing under pseudonyms. One story of his, Roman Holiday, won the Oscar but the statuette was actually assigned to a front (Ian McLellan Hunter, whose son refused to give the prize back when the Oscar was posthumously awarded to Trumbo in 1993) and another Oscar was wonby Robert Rich, one of the pseudonyms that Trumbo used, for writing The Brave One. Thanks to Otto Preminger he was credited for Exodus and Kirk Douglas himself revealed that Trumbo had been the pen behind Spartacus. Eventually Trumbo went back to the US where he died in 1976.

A febbraio il pubblico italiano avrà la possibilità di conoscere Dalton Trumbo, per lo più sconosciuto al di fuori degli Stati Uniti. Il film che parla della sua vita è stato nominato per due Golden Globes e il protagonista è Bryan Cranston, al suo primo grande ruolo dopo Breaking Bad. Interpreta Dalton Trumbo, che nacque a Montrose, Colorado, nel 1905. Un aspirante giornalista e scrittore dalla scuola media, Trumbo vide una svolta nel 1934 quando pubblicò il suo primo romanzo Eclipse e gli fu offerto un lavoro come lettore di sceneggiature alla Warner Bros. In circa dieci anni divenne uno dei più richiesti sceneggiatori a Hollywood e il suo terzo libro,Johnny gothisgun, vinse il National Book Award. Il libro rifletteva la sua posizione politica contraria alla guerra e i suoi contatti con il partito comunista a cui si era iscritto nel 1943. Nel 1947 gli fu chiesto di comparire presso il Comitato per le attività anti-americane della Camera, il cui obiettivo era quello di indagare sull’eventuale presenza di propaganda russa nei film americani. Si rifiutò di rispondere a tutte le domande e, insieme con altri 9 colleghi, fu messo in una lista nera e anche mandato in prigione tre anni dopo. Quando uscì, si trasferì in Messico dove continuò a scrivere sotto pseudonimi. Uno dei suoi soggetti, Vacanze Romane, vinse l’Oscar ma la statuetta fu in realtà assegnata a un suo prestanome (IanMcLellan Hunter il cui figlio rifiutò di dare indietro il premio quando l’Oscar fu assegnato postumo a Trumbo nel 1993) e un altro Oscar fu vinto da Robert Rich, uno degli pseudonimi usati da Trumbo, per la scrittura di La più grande corrida. Grazie a Otto Preminger, gli fu dato credito per Exodus e lo stesso Kirk Douglas rivelò che Trumbo era stato la penna di Spartacus. Alla fine Trumbo tornò negli Stati Uniti dove morì nel 1976.
