The concept of protecting inventions has roots that stretch back centuries. Some believe that there were early patent-like systems in ancient Greece. The first documented system emerged in Renaissance Italy in the 1470s, where inventors could gain a temporary monopoly on their creations. Over time, most countries established a system of patent law, and in the US, the first Patent Act was passed in 1790 and it was called “An Act to promote the Progress of Useful Arts”.
