Learning English through… new Royals

Parliamo questo mese di Meghan Markle, che da maggio entra a far parte della famiglia reale inglese.

Since the announcement of her engagement with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has been one of the most talked-about women in the world. People have been speculating on the cut and designer of her wedding dress and journalists have been digging into her previous life. However, Markle is more than a future Royal. She is a Californian who graduated from Northwestern with a double major in theater and international studies. She is also an advocate for UN Women and at one of their conferences in 2015 told the tale of a sexist ad that led her to action. The tagline on the dishwash ad campaign was: “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans”. She felt that the treatment was unfair and aged 11 wrote to many journalists, to Hillary Clinton who was then the First Lady, and to the manufacturer. She received responses, her campaign became a bit of a news story and the ad tagline became: “People all over America…”. As an actress, her most famous role is that of Rachel Zane in the hit TV show Suits. She plays a paralegal that during the course of the series goes to law school and becomes involved with the main character. The last episodes with her in it have been airing since March and incredibly, she will walk down the aisle in the TV world just a few weeks before the Royal Wedding.

Dal momento dell’annuncio del suo fidanzamento ufficiale con il Principe Harry, Meghan Markle è diventata una delle donne di cui si parla di più nel mondo. Le persone hanno iniziato a speculare sul taglio e lo stilista del vestito e i giornalisti stanno indagando sul suo passato. Tuttavia, Markle è di più di un futuro membro della famiglia reale. È una californiana che si è laureata alla Northwestern con una doppia specializzazione in teatro e studi internazionali. È anche una sostenitrice di UN (ONU) Women, e ad una delle loro conferenze ha raccontato la storia di una pubblicità sessista che l’ha spinta all’azione. Il tagline della campagna del detersivo per i piatti era: “Le donne in tutta America stanno combattendo pentole e padelle unte”. Ritenne che il trattamento fosse ingiusto e a 11 anni scrisse a molte giornaliste, a Hillary Clinton che al tempo era la First Lady e al fabbricante. Ricevette delle risposte, la sua campagna venne ripresa da un telegiornale e la tagline della pubblicità divenne: “Le persone di tutta America…”.  Come attrice, il suo ruolo più famoso è quello di Rachel Zane nello show televisivo di successo Suits. Interpreta un’assistente legale che durante il corso della serie prende la laurea e ha una relazione con il personaggio principale. Gli ultimi episodi che la vedono presente sono stati messi in onda da Marzo e incredibilmente andrà all’altare nel mondo televisivo solo qualche settimana prima del matrimonio reale.
