Learning English through… Musical Biopics

Parliamo questo mese del film Elvis, in uscita quest’estate in tutto il mondo.

Back in 2014, Warner Bros was already developing a biopic on Elvis Presley and was in negotiation with Baz Luhrmann to direct it. The project was shelved for a few years and it saw the light only in 2022 and will be the director’s next big movie after The Great Gatsby in 2013, once again set in the past. Luhrmann chose to tell the story of such a great life by focusing the movie on the relationship between Elvis and his promoter, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. Austin Butler instead plays the King of Rock, after having impressed the director with an audition tape of Unchained Melody. For the score of the movie, Luhrmann chose an all-star lineup, with Doja Cat, Eminem, Kacey Musgraves and even Italian band Måneskin. The movie was first unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival and received a 12-minute standing ovation from the audience. Reviews however were mixed. Time Out gave it four stars and described it as a “larger-than-life, energizing and wildly entertaining anthem to the King”. The Guardian instead gave it two stars and wrote: “It’s not a movie so much as a 159-minute trailer for a film called Elvis – a relentless, frantically flashy montage, epic and yet negligible at the same time, with no variation of pace”.

Il progetto, accantonato per qualche anno, ha visto la luce solo nel 2022 e sarà il nuovo grande film del regista dopo The Great Gatsby nel 2013, ancora una volta ambientato nel passato. Luhrmann ha scelto di raccontare una vita così straordinaria focalizzando il film sulla relazione tra Elvis e il suo promoter, il Colonello Tom Parker, interpretato da Tom Hanks. Austin Butler invece fa il Re del Rock, dopo aver fatto colpo sul regista con un video di audizione di Unchained Melody. Per la colonna sonora, Luhrmann ha scelto una lista di star, con Doja Cat, Eminem, Kacey Musgraves e anche la band italiana Måneskin. Il film è stato mostrato per la prima volta al festival di Cannes e ha ricevuto una standing-ovation di 12 minuti dal pubblico. Tuttavia le recensioni sono state contrastanti. Time Out gli ha dato quattro stelle e l’ha descritto come un “inno al Re che è appariscente, energetico e incredibilmente accattivante”. The Guardian invece gli ha dato due stelle e ha scritto: “Non è tanto un film ma quanto un trailer di 159 minuti per un film chiamato Elvis – un implacabile, freneticamente appariscente montaggio, epico e tuttavia insignificante allo stesso tempo, con nessuna variazione di ritmo”.
