Learning English through… methods of voting

In the US elections, citizens are allowed to vote early by mail. This custom started as early as the colonial days but it became important during the Civil War. Indeed, the key election was the 1864 one, where president Abraham Lincoln won also thanks to the soldiers that voted for him from the trenches. From then on, it was recognized that people might have other valid reasons not to be present on Election Day. This is why most of the states extended this possibility to whomever could justify his or her absence. In order to vote by mail, after having applied, a person will receive a ballot and a return envelope that need to be filled and mailed back by a certain deadline. The return envelope has a specific barcode on it so that it is not lost. While there is proof that this system would save a lot of money for the states, not many of them have heavily depended on it for their elections. This could all change this year. With the pandemic still at large in the US, states are suggesting that people apply for absentee ballots in order to avoid the spreading of Covid-19. Although this system could be very useful, it could mean that the election would look a lot different this year. Indeed, the counting of votes could take days and we might not know by the morning who the winner is.

Nelle elezioni americane è permesso ai cittadini di votare prima per posta. Questa usanza ebbe già inizio nel periodo coloniale ma diventò importante durante la Guerra Civile. Infatti, fu chiave l’elezione del 1864, quando il presidente Abramo Lincoln vinse anche grazie ai soldati che lo votarono dal fronte. Da allora in poi ci si rese conto che le persone potessero avere altre valide motivazioni per non essere presenti il giorno dell’elezione. Questo è il motivo per cui la maggior parte degli stati ha esteso la possibilità a chiunque potesse giustificare la sua assenza. Per poter votare per posta, dopo essersi iscritti, ogni persona riceve un modulo e una busta che devono entrambi essere compilati e rimandati indietro entro una certa scadenza. La busta per la restituzione ha uno specifico codice a barre in modo che non vada perduta. Sebbene ci siano prove che questo sistema farebbe risparmiare molti soldi agli stati, non molti ci dipendono per le loro elezioni. Tutto questo, però, potrebbe cambiare quest’anno. Con la pandemia ancora in corso negli Stati Uniti, gli stati stanno suggerendo che le persone si iscrivano per votare in absentia per evitare il diffondersi del Covid-19. Anche se questo sistema potrebbe essere molto utile, significherebbe che le elezioni potrebbero sembrare molto diverse quest’anno. Infatti, il conteggio dei voti potrebbe richiedere giorni e potremmo non conoscere il vincitore entro la mattina dopo.
