In the US elections, citizens are allowed to vote early by mail. This custom started as early as the colonial days but it became important during the Civil War. Indeed, the key election was the 1864 one, where president Abraham Lincoln won also thanks to the soldiers that voted for him from the trenches. From then on, it was recognized that people might have other valid reasons not to be present on Election Day.
