The 2021 NBA Draft will be held on July 29 in Brooklyn, New York. Each year the draft allows the 30 franchises to select some of the most-promising young players on the circuit. To encourage competitiveness in the League, the draft favors those teams that did poorly in the previous regular season, giving them a chance to improve their roster. The draft exists since 1947, but the rules have been changed over the years, most recently in 2019. It consists of two rounds, in which each team gets to pick a player. The teams that get to choose the first four players are determined by a complicated lottery system, in which the odds of winning increase for teams with the worse records. This year, Houston, Detroit and Orlando are the franchises with the best chance of getting the first picks. Players eligible for the draft can come from three backgrounds: college players, players that just finished high school, and international players. It often happens that the first pick does not become the greatest star. For example, Michael Jordan was selected in 1984 as 3rd coming from college basketball, Kobe Bryant in 1996 was chosen as 13th coming from his high school and Luka Dončić again as 3rd in 2018 as an international player coming from Real Madrid. The players chosen in the first round have a 2-year guaranteed contract with the option for the 3rd and 4th. Their yearly salaries are mostly fixed and can go from 1.6 Mio to 8.4 Mio for the first pick.

Per incoraggiare la competitività della Lega, la draft favorisce i team che non sono andati bene nella precedente stagione canonica, dandogli una possibilità di migliorare la loro rosa.
