Parliamo questo mese di Babe Ruth, nato il 6 febbraio 1895 – George Herman Ruth was a child with ants in his pants when he was sent to St Mary’s Industrial School for Boys for stricter guidance. There, he discovered baseball and the Xaverian Brothers who ran the school helped him develop his talent. They invited Jack Dunn, owner of the Baltimore Orioles to watch him play and he decided to offer him a contract that same day. George joined the team aged 19 and he was considered to be the owner’s “new babe” and that’s how the name Babe Ruth was born.  After less than one year with the Orioles he was sold to the Boston Red Sox where he displayed his skills and was included in the daily line-up. After 4 years, in 1919, he became a New York Yankee in a move that stayed in the history of baseball. Indeed, after Babe Ruth’s sale, Boston did not win the World Series for 86 years, a period that many fans attributed to “the curse of the Bambino”. Conversely, the New York Yankees became one of the most successful teams in the MLB. The Yankee stadium has often been called “the house that Ruth built”, given how much his presence contributed to the popularity of the team. To this day, Babe Ruth is still revered as one of the greatest baseball players ever.

George Herman Ruth era un bambino molto vivace quando fu mandato alla St Mary’s Industrial School for Boys per un’educazione più severa. Lì scoprì il baseball e i Fratelli di San Francesco Saverio che gestivano la scuola lo aiutarono a sviluppare il suo talento. Invitarono Jack Dunn, proprietario dei Baltimore Orioles per vederlo giocare e lui decise di offrirgli un contratto quello stesso giorno. George entrò a far parte del team a 19 anni e fu considerato il “nuovo tesoruccio (babe)” del proprietario e fu così che nacque il nome Babe Ruth. Dopo meno di un anno con gli Orioles fu venduto ai Boston Red Sox dove mostrò le sue capacità e fu incluso nella squadra titolare. Dopo 4 anni, nel 1919, divenne un New York Yankee in una mossa che rimase nella storia del baseball. Infatti, dopo la vendita di Babe Ruth, Boston non vinse più le World Series per 86 anni, un periodo che molti fan attribuirono alla “maledizione del Bambino”. Al contrario, i New York Yankees divennero uno dei team più di successo della MLB (Major League Baseball). Lo Yankee Stadium è stato spesso chiamato “la casa che Ruth costruì”, visto l’enorme contributo dato dalla sua presenza alla popolarità del team. Ad oggi, Babe Ruth è ancora venerato come uno dei più grandi giocatori di baseball di sempre.
