In questo primo mese del 2016, parliamo della canzone numero 1 del gennaio di 50 anni fa: The Sound of Silence.

Today “The Sound of Silence” is one of the most-performed songs of all time but this hit wasn’t an immediate success. The song had been written by Paul Simon when he was only 21 and its iconic beginning, “Hello Darkness, my old friend”, referred to his writing music in his parents’ bathroom during the night. It was used by Simon & Garfunkel as an audition to obtain a recording contract at Columbia and an acoustic version of it was originally contained in their debut album “Wednesday Morning, 3 AM”. The album sold only 2000 copies and this setback led to the duo splitting up and going their separate ways, Simon to a solo career and Garfunkel back to college. The song, however started having some following in March 1965 and their producer, Tom Wilson, had the idea of remixing the song using the musicians that had been used by Bob Dylan. He had the new version of the song made without Simon & Garfunkel’s approval and released it on September 1965. The song started climbing the Billboard chart and by January 1966, it had become number one. This unexpected turn of events led to Paul and Art reuniting and starting a new career together.
