According to a research updated in 2013, one in every eight pennies spent in the UK goes to a Tesco till. That gives the idea of just how much Tesco is embedded in Britons’ everyday life. The supermarket chain that is now present also in other countries like India, Malaysia and China, employs about half a million people over the world and including franchises boasts 7599 stores. So what is the story behind a company that has 70.9 billion in sales? It all started in 1919, at the end of the First World War. Jack Cohen, that had been part of the Royal Flying Corps used its demobilization money to buy leftover stock from the army and sell it at a stall in an East End London market. His first pro-ducts were fish paste and golden syrup. According to an interview he gave later in life: “By the end of that morning’s work I had taken 4 pounds of which 1 pound was mine”. From then, he expanded to having other stalls and when it came to sell products under his own line, tea to be exact, he had to invent a name. He took the initials of the supplier T.E. Stockwell and added the first two letters of his surname thus crea-ting TESCO. The first shop opened in 1929 and ope-rated according to his creator’s motto: “Stack them high, sell them low”. A philosophy that allowed the company to become the third largest mass retailer in the world.
