Janet Yellen was born in 1946 in Brooklyn, NY. She studied economics at Brown and then received a PhD at Yale. She credited James Tobin as her mentor and she said that what impressed her was “his very strong commitment to social justice and to the view that economics is magical and it’s about making the world a better place”.
