In 2007, smartphones already existed but their capabilities were limited and they all had difficult-to-use keyboards that made them popular only among professionals. On January 9 of that year, Steve Jobs started his Macworld presentation with this sentence: “every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything”. The first iPhone was introduced as three different products in one: a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough Internet communicator. Apple included keyboards that appeared only when needed and made the device much easier to use. The iPhone also had a camera, the possibility of watching videos and an internet experience that was similar to the desktop one thanks to native apps. After the conference, the hype grew and long queues formed at Apple stores across the United States when the product was released to the public, on June 29 2007. The launch did not go without a hitch. Customers complained that the phone was too slow, too expensive and that it locked them to a specific service provider (AT&T). However, in an article written in November of that year, Time Magazine chose it as the invention of 2007. Among their reasons, two look now as almost prescient: “it’ll make other phones better” and “it’s not a phone, it’s a platform”. Indeed, the iPhone was the stepping stone for contemporary smartphones and the app economy is now worth around 4.5 trillion dollars.
