Learning English through… NBA Teams

Parliamo questo mese della storia dietro i nomi di alcuni dei team NBA – Today the NBA is one of the most important sport leagues in the world, with an estimated worth of more than 35 billion dollars. Most of the teams are popular worldwide and while some of the names have been picked out by marketing agencies and public polls, some others have a more interesting story to tell. For example, why are the LA Lakers called that way when they play in a city with no lakes? The answer is that they were originally based in Minnesota, “the land of 10.000 lakes” but then the owner Bob Short decided to move the team to a larger and richer city. The NY Knicks instead have a more historical name. Indeed, the knickerbockers were the pants used by Dutch Settlers in the 17^th century. Most of them settled in New York and the name became associated to the city and then shortened in Knicks for the basketball team. Finally, the Indiana Pacers got their moniker as an homage to Indiana’s tradition of harness and car racing. Pacing is in fact a gait of harness racing and pacer cars are used in car races such as the Indy 500.

Oggi l’NBA è uno dei campionati sportivi più importanti al mondo con un valore stimato di oltre 35 mld di dollari. Molti dei team sono popolari in tutto il mondo e mentre alcuni hanno dei nomi che sono stati scelti da agenzie marketing o sondaggi pubblici, altri hanno una storia più interessante da raccontare. Per esempio, perché gli LA Lakers sono chiamati così quando giocano in una città senza laghi? La risposta è che originariamente erano basati in Minnesota, “la terra dei 10.000 laghi” ma poi il proprietario Bob Short decise di spostare la squadra in una città più grande e ricca. I NY Knicks invece hanno un nome più storico. Infatti, i knickerbockers erano i pantaloni usati dai migranti Olandesi nel 17esimo secolo. Molti di quelli si stanziarono a New York e il nome venne associato alla città e poi ridotto in Knicks per il team di basket. Infine, gli Indiana Pacers hanno ottenuto il loro nome come omaggio alla tradizione dell’Indiana per le corse di cavalli e di macchine. Il Pacing è infatti un’andatura delle corse al trotto e le pacer cars (conosciute anche come safety cars) sono usate nelle corse di macchine come la Indy 500.
