Learning English through… Midterm Elections

Parliamo questo mese delle elezioni statunitensi di metà mandato, che si terranno il 6 Novembre.

The 2018 US elections are called midterm because they take place in the middle of President Trump’s term. Normally the President’s party loses ground at these elections and the Republicans are worried that the Democrats might flip the House. To better understand the situation, it is useful to know how the legislative branch gets elected in the US. The Congress includes both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House is renewed every two years so every member might lose his/her place in 2018. Rules are different for the Senate because each of the 100 senators serves a 6-year term. The renewal is staggered and just 1/3^rd of the seats will be contested in November. Democrats have to defend most of these seats that were obtained during the height of the Obama days and therefore the Republicans should manage to hold on to the majority. However, some of the senate races might have a symbolic value. For example, in Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke is hoping to unseat Ted Cruz in a deeply-red state by running a campaign that has touched all districts in Texas and is counting on young people’s votes. Midterm elections are important also at a local level. Indeed, 87 State Legislatures will be renewed and 36 states will hold gubernatorial races.

Le elezioni statunitensi del 2018 sono chiamate di metà mandato perché si svolgono nel mezzo del mandato del Presidente Trump. Normalmente il partito del presidente perde terreno a queste elezioni e i Repubblicani sono preoccupati che i Democratici possano capovolgere il controllo della Camera. Per meglio comprendere la situazione, è utile sapere come il ramo legislativo viene eletto negli Stati Uniti. Il Congresso include sia la Camera dei Rappresentanti che il Senato. La Camera viene rinnovata ogni due anni quindi ogni membro potrebbe perdere il suo posto nel 2018. Le regole sono diverse per il Senato perché ognuno dei 100 senatori ha un mandato di 6 anni. Il rinnovo è scaglionato e si voterà solo per 1/3 dei seggi a Novembre. I Democratici devono difendere molti di questi seggi ottenuti durante gli anni di Obama e quindi i Repubblicani dovrebbero riuscire a mantenere la maggioranza. Tuttavia, alcune di queste sfide per il Senato potrebbero avere un valore simbolico. Per esempio, in Texas il Democratico Beto O’Rourke spera di prendere il posto di Ted Cruz in uno stato fortemente repubblicano conducendo una campagna che ha toccato tutti i distretti del Texas e che conta sui voti delle persone giovani. Le elezioni di metà mandato sono importanti anche a livello locale. Infatti, 87 legislature statali saranno rinnovate e 36 stati eleggeranno il Governatore.
