It’s a wonderful life. Colgo l’occasione per augurarvi Merry Christmas!

More than 70 years after its release, It’s a wonderful life is considered one of the most-loved movies of all time. It tells the story of George Bailey, a businessman who is on the brink of going to prison for a debt he has no fault for and contemplates suicide on Christmas’ Eve. An angel is sent to Earth to change his mind. Bailey thinks that his existence is worthless and the angel decides to show him the truth. At the drop of a hat, he finds himself in a world in which George Bailey had never been born. He realizes that throughout the years his good actions had helped many people, and so decides to keep living his wonderful life. Moreover, the men and women of his town, remembering his past kindness, pay his debt. Today the movie is very popular also for some quotes like “remember George: no man is a failure who has friends”, but in 1946 the studio lost money in producing it and let the rights to the movie lapse. That is why in the 1970s many networks could air it for free in the days before Christmas, making it well-known in the US. At the beginning Capra’s work also had critics for its treatment of Mr. Potter, the banker. For example, the FBI was convinced that putting a banker as the antagonist was a threat to capitalism and showed communist sympathies.
