Parliamo questo mese di una delle App più famose del mondo: WhatsApp Although born in California, home to so many startups, WhatsApp has an East European DNA, since the family of his creator Jan Koum emigrated from Ukraine to escape a wave of anti-Semitism and Igor Solomennikov, the developer that first wrote the code for the iPhone is Russian. Koum’s original idea was not that of a messaging app, more of a service to write short statuses to let people in your address book know what you were doing, something that sounds more like the modern Twitter. Indeed, the name WhatsApp is a play on the expression What’s up? and the word App. Instead Koum’s Russian friends started using it to check on each other and exchanging short conversations which sparked the idea of a chat. Koum then contacted his ex-coworker at Yahoo Brian Aucton to bring him on-board. Together they secured funding from other ex-Yahoo employees. From then on, they made WhatsApp the most-used instant-messaging service in the world. In February 2014 WhatsApp that by then already had over 500 million users in the world, was acquired by Facebook for the record sum of 19 billion dollars. Despite some controversy its users keep growing and the company is now moving towards providing also a Voice service.
Sebbene sia nata in California, patria di così tante startups, WhatsApp ha un Dna dell’Est Europa visto che la famiglia del suo creatore Jan Koum emigrò dall’Ucraina per scappare a un’ondata di anti-semitismo e Igor Solomennikov, il programmatore che per primo scrisse il codice per l’iPhone è russo. L’idea originaria di Koum era non quella di un’app di messaggi, ma più un servizio per scrivere status corti per far sapere alle persone nella tua rubrica cosa stavi facendo, qualcosa che assomiglia al moderno Twitter. Infatti, il nome WhatsApp è un gioco di parole sull’espressione What’s up? (che mi racconti?) e la parola App. Invece gli amici russi di Koum iniziarono a usarlo per sentirsi e avere brevi conversazioni, il che diede vita all’idea di una chat. Koum contattò il suo ex collega di Yahoo Brian Aucton per coinvolgerlo. Insieme, ottennero un investimento da altri ex dipendenti di Yahoo. Da allora, hanno reso WhatsApp il servizio di messaggi più usato al mondo. Nel febbraio 2014 WhatsApp, che per allora aveva già oltre 500 milioni di utenti nel mondo, fu acquisita da Facebook per la somma record di 19 miliardi di dollari. Nonostante qualche controversia, i suoi u-tenti continuano a crescere e la compagnia si sta movendo ora per avere anche un servizio vocale.
