What started as an experiment with Maleficent in 2014 has quickly grown into a full-blown project for Disney that is planning 18 live-action versions of its classics. While Maleficent was a retooling of Sleeping Beauty from the villain’s point of view, other movies such as 2015’s Cinderella and 2016’s The Jungle Book tell the same stories with non-animated actors. Beauty and The Beast will do so in March 2017, and the bar for this movie is set very high, since the 1991 feature is one of Disney’s most loved ones. The official trailer garnered 127 million views during its first day, breaking the record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens thanks also to the popularity of its star, Emma Watson, that promoted the trailer on her Facebook page. Watson, who became famous as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, was originally offered the role of Cinderella but turned it down. She accepted Belle only after having been assured that the script would be changed to create a more modern heroine, capable of being a role model for girls everywhere. She and the director Bill Condon reimagined Belle as an inventor like her father, in an effort to answer Watson’s questions about what Disney Princesses did all day. The cast features an all-star roster with Dan Stevens as the Beast, Ewan McGregor as the Candlestick Lumiere, Sir Ian McKellen as the Clock Cogsworth, Emma Thompson as the Teapot Mrs Potts, and Stanley Tucci as the Grand Piano Cadenza, a new character created for this version. As for the musical part of the movie, Celine Dion, that, in a duet with Peabo Bryson sang the iconic ballad Beauty and the Beast that played in the credits, has been chosen to perform a new song called “How does a moment last forever?” written by legendary composer Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice.
