The 19th of June 1978 a new comic strip appeared in 21 American newspapers. Its characters were Garfield, a large cat with an orange fur and Jon, its owner. The creator of the strip was Jim Davis, who had spent his childhood on a farm with as many as 25 stray cats. Davis started drawing when he was very young since its asthma often forced him to stay in bed. He started gaining fame with a strip about bugs, called Gnorm Gnat. The editors at the newspapers recognized its humor but felt that bugs were not relatable. Therefore, Davis decided to change its subject. Looking around, he realized that dogs were very popular but there was nothing about cats and that is how Garfield was born. He gave to Garfield the name and partly the personality of his grandfather: James Garfield Davis. Its main features are his love for food, his disdain for exercise (“breathing is exercise”) and its cynicism. This time, people could relate to the lazy and sarcastic cat and Garfield had an enormous success. Today it is read by over 200 million people and its merchandise earns north of 750million $ annually.
